A couple of years ago, Jim attended AOPA’s first regional fly-in in San Marcos, TX. Angel Flight had a table set up with brochures and friendly staff in the exhibit hall. Jim had heard of Angel Flight through AOPA and thought, “what a sensible and compassionate service this is. If I am going to fly 2 or 3 times a month to maintain proficiency, why not use the skills to give back in such a meaningful way. If I could do one mission a month, I feel like I am making a real difference in people’s lives. As expected, I get more out of it than those I am helping.” Jim became the South Texas Wing Leader in April 2016. Jim believes our greatest challenge is that South Texas does not have enough missions either beginning or ending within our territory. By making contact with medical providers like CTRC, START, Methodist, Baptist and Christus Santa Rosa Hospital Systems, he hopes to make more missions available to the pilots in our wing. He has done a number of missions, but would, like many of us, like to do more.
Jim had always wanted to learn to fly and, in the 1990's, had a friend and a business client who both owned their own airplanes. Both were encouraging and took Jim with them a number of times. Strangely, after 9/11, Jim decided that this would be as good a time as any to get started on earning a private pilot’s license. In 2002, he began taking lessons and earned his license in 2004. In 2005, he bought a Cessna 182T with a G1000 and began working on his instrument rating, which he earned in 2010. No, that is not my Cessna TTX in the picture. That is from the 2014 AOPA event in San Marcos. Jim has just over 800 hours total time as of June 2016.
